The 2027 Bible reading plan: how to read the whole King James Bible in a year
Reading the whole Bible in one year sounds big, but it comes down to a few chapters a day. Here is how the math works, what the first week can look like, and the habits that help people actually finish.
Want it laid out for you? Our printable 2027 KJV plan has all 365 days, monthly checklists, weekly journal pages and 12 verses to memorize.
Get the 2027 plan, $9The simple math
The King James Bible has 66 books and 1,189 chapters: 929 in the Old Testament and 260 in the New Testament. 2027 is not a leap year, so it has 365 days. Divide one by the other and you get a little over 3 chapters a day. In practice that means 3 chapters on most days and 4 on some.
If you start on Friday, January 1, 2027, and read every day, you finish on December 31. Starting later is fine; finish twelve months after you begin.
Choose your style of plan
Straight through
Genesis to Revelation, in order. It is the easiest to follow, though the law and genealogies in the early books can feel slow.
Old and New Testament together
Each day you read some Old Testament and some New Testament, often with a Psalm or Proverb. You reach the Gospels in January, and the harder passages are broken up with easier ones.
Chronological
Events in the order they happened, so the Psalms of David sit next to his life in Samuel and the prophets sit next to the kings they spoke to.
A sample first week (straight through)
Here is what a straight-through week could look like, about 3 to 4 chapters a day. It is one example of the pace, not the only way.
| Day | Date | Reading | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fri, Jan 1 | Genesis 1–3 | Creation, the garden, the fall |
| 2 | Sat, Jan 2 | Genesis 4–7 | Cain and Abel, the line of Adam, Noah and the ark |
| 3 | Sun, Jan 3 | Genesis 8–11 | The flood ends, the covenant, the tower of Babel |
| 4 | Mon, Jan 4 | Genesis 12–15 | The call of Abram, Lot, God's covenant with Abram |
| 5 | Tue, Jan 5 | Genesis 16–18 | Hagar and Ishmael, the promise of Isaac |
| 6 | Wed, Jan 6 | Genesis 19–21 | Sodom and Gomorrah, the birth of Isaac |
| 7 | Thu, Jan 7 | Genesis 22–24 | Abraham and Isaac on the mountain, a wife for Isaac |

Tips that help people finish
- Same time, same place. Tie your reading to something you already do every day, like morning coffee or the first few minutes of lunch.
- Check it off. A printed checklist on the fridge or in your Bible is a small thing that keeps you honest.
- Write one line. After each reading, write down one thing you noticed. Our guide to KJV Bible journal ideas shows a simple method.
- Read with someone. A spouse, a friend or a small group on the same plan gives you someone to talk to about what you read.
- Expect hard weeks. Leviticus, Numbers and parts of the prophets are slow going for most readers. Keep the pace; the story picks back up.
- Do not quit after a missed day. Read today's chapters and keep moving. You can catch up on a quiet weekend.
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.Psalm 119:105, KJV
Why the King James Version?
The KJV has been read in English-speaking churches for over four hundred years, and its wording is behind many of the verses people know by heart. Its language takes a little getting used to: "thee" and "thou" are simply "you," and words ending in "-eth" are like our "-s" ("he walketh" means "he walks"). After a week or two most readers find the rhythm.

How many chapters a day do I need to read to finish the Bible in a year?
The 66 books of the King James Bible have 1,189 chapters. Spread over the 365 days of 2027, that is a little over 3 chapters a day, so most days you read 3 or 4.
How long does a day's reading take?
It depends on the chapters and how fast you read. Many days take around 15 to 20 minutes; long chapters, such as Psalm 119, take longer.
What if I fall behind?
Do not try to catch up all at once. Pick up with today's reading and add one extra chapter a day until you are back on track, or simply finish a few weeks into 2028. Reading the whole Bible late is still reading the whole Bible.
Should I read straight through or mix Old and New Testament?
Both work. Straight through is simple and shows the story in order. A mixed plan, with some Old Testament, some New Testament and a Psalm each day, gives variety when you reach harder books like Leviticus.
